Maximizing Media

It’s a digital world. And that makes Kelowna Christian Reformed Church very happy. With a troupe of volunteers who are avowed techno-geeks, Kelowna Christian Reformed Church is passionate about producing memorable media that resonates with its audience.

The Kelowna Christian Reformed Church media team has produced high-impact, professional-quality media presentations that range from simple video collages to previews of upcoming message series to dramatic miniseries events.

Q: How do you keep up with the rapidly changing technology?

A: The same way everyone else does – a little bit at a time. We look at what our needs are and then keep an eye out for cost-effective solutions.

Q: What would Kelowna Christian Reformed Church say to a church that perhaps doesn’t have the financial resources to make a huge investment in state-of-the-art technology or training?

A: Prioritize. We have a “need it” and “wish we had it” list – and we’re careful not to let the latter drive our decisions. In terms of technology, there are many resources available for churches that don’t have the money, manpower or skills to create a high-quality video presentation from scratch.

Q: There are those who believe that using such sophisticated and “worldly” technology is just catering to the materialistic nature of our culture – and actually puts more emphasis on “what is cool?” than “who is Jesus?” Does it?

A: No. We use the technology that our unchurched friends are familiar with to reach them in their comfort zone. The technology is just another tool that helps us share the love of Christ.

Q: So how do you keep the media from overwhelming or overshadowing the message?

A: We share God’s love the same way Jesus did – by first meeting people where they are and addressing their felt needs; then using stories and examples to encourage them to take their next step toward Christ. Jesus was a master storyteller; he enthralled his audiences. We may not have his divine oratorical gift, but we can use the resources available to help us get the message across in the most meaningful way for our audience.

Q: How do you put together a crack team of media specialists? Where do you find them – and do you have to train them?

A: In truth, they come to us. When people see what we’re doing and how we’re harnessing the technology and their skills for God, they want to be a part of that.

Q: What are the first four questions to ask when considering a new video project?

A: 1. What is the objective and is this the best way to meet it?
2. How will it get done – and by whom?
3. When is it due?
4. What is the budget – and how can this project be completed most economically?

Kelowna Christian Reformed Church clearly takes technology seriously. And the church is more than happy to share practical tips and resources that will allow any church, large or small, to reach lost people.
