Embracing Team
Whena
church staff grows, it can become difficult to communicate values that
keep team members in sync. At Granger Community Church (GCC), staff
values are written, allowing the team to be aware of expectations and
embrace the vision.
During last year's staff retreat, Senior
Pastor Mark Beeson taught the staff values to the church's entire team
and their spouses to reemphasize the importance of vision.
Executive
Pastor Tim Stevens said, "There are certain attitudes or behaviors or
beliefs that define the culture of a staff. It may be how you treat
each other, how you celebrate or how you relate that is unique. If you
don't write it down and state it as a value, new staff members may
never know and veteran staff members may forget."
Stevens said when a church's staff can no longer sit around a table together, it's time to consider putting values in writing.
Gary
Lamb, senior pastor of Stone Ridge Church, which is currently being
planted in Canton, GA, recognized the importance of written staff
values so much that he implemented them before the church's first
service has even been conducted.
The reason is simple, he said. It's to let the staff of five (including himself) know what's expected.
"Being
in a church plant, everyone starts with a clean slate and this gave
them some guard rails to work by," Lamb said. And, they give everyone a
clear picture of what's expected, he added.
Staffing procedures are a valuable tool to help create a quality staff and Christ-centered focus. Purchase the GCC Staff Core Values as a tool to help unify your team vision.
